saints earn season's first win on homecoming
MAYSVILLE | It’s good to be king.
Just ask St. Patrick’s Jack Gallenstein.
On Saturday the senior was named Homecoming King between games of a girl-boy home doubleheader against Silver Grove and then followed by tallying a career high 33 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
His performance could not have come at a better time as the Saints captured their first win of the season by out-lasting the Big Trains 97-82.
“It’s been an insane day. I had a bet with a couple of the other seniors for (who’d be) homecoming king. I did not think I was going to win it, but I did so it was pretty cool and then getting out here and getting this first win with these boys was just something I am not going to forget ever,” Gallenstein said. “It was awesome. Definitely a great memory.”
Eighth-grader Riley Mastin also had a memorable night scoring a career best 31 points.
“We’ve worked all year. … We’ve been working our rears off from start of the season until now. (We’d) gradually built up and (tonight) we were able to close a game,” St. Patrick head coach Aaron Rigdon said. “They did exactly what we asked them to do. They followed game plan. We took some bad shots and that comes with our youth. But when it got down to it, they were feeding the big guy (Gallenstein), feeding Riley Mastin … So they followed the plan and we got the job done.”
The score was close throughout most of the first half, although St. Patrick did hold a 40-31 lead with 2:44 remaining in the second quarter. Behind the play of Spencer Macke, who had 16 points in the period and finished the game with 42 points and 17 rebounds, Silver Grove (3-9) rallied to close the gap to 47-43 by halftime.
St. Patrick (1-16) turned up the heat in the third quarter as the hosts surged to as much as a 14-point lead. Over a stretch of one minute and 24 seconds, the Saints out-scored the Big Trains 12-1.
Gallenstein credited the team’s focus on driving to the basket as a key to the late push.
“We got into a little stretch where came down and we started relying on the three more. That can work sometimes (because) we can hit the three,” Gallenstein said. “But, we had a lead and it was the third quarter and we needed to attack the basket because they had some guys in foul trouble. So it was going to be the best thing for us to get to the rim and get to the line.”
After trailing 69-58 to start the final period, Silver Grove closed the gap to four (82-78) with 3:40 left in the game. However, led by Gallenstein’s 17 fourth-quarter points, coach Rigdon’s squad responded to the challenge and out-scored the visitors 15-4 the rest of the way.
“We hit free throws tonight for one. We haven’t been hitting free throws this year … so that was a big thing. We won the rebounding battle and we limited our turnovers to I think 10 for the game,” Rigdon said. “That’s a big step up for us with such a young team.”
Rigdon was especially pleased the victory came on Homecoming.
“Homecoming especially for these seniors, I tell them all the time you only have so many opportunities in life and as they get older those become less and less so you’ve got to take advantage of them,” he said. “So to get this win for those seniors, who stuck around when they could have hit the road with us pretty much losing all of our players, they stuck around and they embraced trying to be role models for these young guys. And it’s really special being Homecoming getting a win for those seniors.”
St. Patrick out-rebounded Silver Grove 46-40 and had 20 assists on 28 baskets.
In addition to his 31 points, Mastin grabbed seven rebounds, collected two steals and dished out two assists. L.J. Connor had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Patrick McKay finished with seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Mike Jones contributed 17 points to Silver Grove’s cause. Austin Smith tallied 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Elijah Noble and Riley Noble each added five rebounds.
“Just too many mistakes. We cut it to four (late in the fourth quarter) and then we had four straight turnovers,” said Silver Grove coach Tom Haney. “We’re improving, but we’ve just got to get Spencer some help.”
