MAYSVILLE | Rose Hill Christian scored five points in the final 21 seconds to collect a 43-42 come-from-behind girls’ basketball victory over host St. Patrick on Saturday. The result stretched the Lady Royals’ win streak to six games, their best mark since collecting 10 consecutive victories from February through early March of the 2006-07 season.
The Lady Royals trailed 41-36 with 1:03 to play, but Bellamee Sparks hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the arc with 21 seconds remaining and Delaynee Sparks made two layups, the last with 7.7 seconds left in the game, to cap off the comeback.
In the last 21 years, St. Patrick won all eight of the previous meetings between the two, including four in the last two seasons.
St. Patrick (4-3) led from the 3:15 mark of the first quarter until Delaynee Sparks’ layup with less than eight seconds remaining in the contest. The score was tied once before the final minute of the game after Delaynee Sparks’ layup 42 seconds into the second half (23-23).
The hosts held a six-point advantage in the second and third quarters, with their largest lead at 37-29 after a Justina Klee 2-foot jump shot 40 seconds into the final period.
Foul shooting factored heavily in the final result. The Lady Saints finished 6-for-17 from the charity stripe, including 3-of-9 in the final quarter. Rose Hill (6-2) made eight of its nine attempts from the line.
St. Patrick finished with a 39-36 edge in rebounding. Caroline McKay and Izzy Riggs had seven boards apiece to lead the hosts, while Allison Hughes and Justina Klee each collected five. Baylee Trimble paced the Lady Royals with 12 rebounds. Delaynee Sparks grabbed six boards with Bellamee Sparks recording five.
