montgomery continues winning ways with wire-to-wire victory at bracken
BROOKSVILLE | Montgomery County got a challenge from a pesky Bracken County squad before eventually pulling away to a 77-55 road victory on Monday night. The Lady Indians led from wire-to-wire en route to collecting their fifth victory in their last six games.
Montgomery County (11-12) got off to a 7-0 start and eventually surged ahead 17-6 by the end of the first quarter. Bracken County (3-20) rallied and closed to within four points twice in the middle of the second period, the latter time at 22-18 with 2:53 to play in the half. However, the Lady Indians clamped down defensively and finished the quarter out-scoring the hosts 12-5.
The visitors extended their lead to 13 points twice in the third period before Jaya Dawson catapulted the Lady Bears to within seven after hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Dawson’s third trey of the quarter ended the period with Montgomery County holding a 52-43 edge.
The Lady Indians began the final period on a 7-1 run and gradually built on their advantage before finishing the contest behind a 9-1 run that extended the margin to a game-high 22 points.
Montgomery County got 37 points from its bench, led by Savannah Parker’s 21. Parker also finished the contest with a game-high 10 rebounds. Shae Harris tallied 16 points, with Hayden Barrier contributing 13 and Maddie Zeek adding 12 in a reserve role.
Bracken County scored 49 points in the final three periods. The 55 total points was its highest of the season and best since a 60-point output in a home win over Robertson County last Feb. 12. Dawson had a season-high 31 points, including 21 from 3-point range. Audrey Wright was next with eight points. Wright and Macie Sharp topped the squad with seven and six rebounds apiece.
Montgomery County held a 36-35 edge in rebounds and committed just nine turnovers, but struggled from the free-throw line only converting 15-of-30 attempts. Bracken County had 22 turnovers, but just 11 in the final three periods.
