2023 Preseason
1. Bishop Brossart (13-6-2) – The Mustangs have the area’s top player in senior midfielder Tyler Smith, which is enough to put coach Ron Dunlevy’s club atop the preseason ranking. Smith, the two-time 1016sports’ “Player of the Year Runner-Up”, has 35 goals and 32 assists over that time; including 17 goals, 13 assists and 47 points last fall. Brossart advanced to the 10th Region championship game in 2022 and returns 17 of 22 players. Frankly, the area’s soccer talent is collectively down this year with some of the typical powerhouses experiencing a roster overhaul. That is not the case for the Mustangs. Only goalkeeper Lucas Steffen (1.0 goals allowed average, 3.5 saves per game, one shutout), forward Landon Bain (two goals, five assists, nine points) and defender Colin Ratcliff (19 games) depart from last year’s team having played in at least 18 games. However, Steffen is a major loss. He anchored the defense the past two seasons. Experience will be a key asset for coach Dunlevy. Including Smith, seven of the top eight scorers return for 2023. Senior forward Landon Guidugli (10 goals, four assists, 24 points), junior utility player Alex Runge (six goals, 14 assists, 26 points), senior utility player Brennan Callahan (six goals, four assists, 16 points) and sophomore defender Max Runge (six goals, three assists, 15 points) highlight that group. Alex Runge ranked 45th in the state in assists per game (0.7). Smith, Guidugli and Alex Runge were each named to the 1016sports’ “Terrific 26 to Watch” list. Junior Luke Alwell (four goals, one assist, nine points), senior defender Tyler Braun (two goals, one assist, five points) and sophomore midfielder Samuel Chirumbolo (one goal, two assists, four points) are also back. Brossart had eight shutouts last season which was 36th-best in the state. Logan Rauen and current senior Michael Cooney each shared time with Steffen in goal last year. Rauen graduated, leaving Cooney as the front runner to take over netminder duties this season. About half of the returnees play on the defensive side. Seniors Rylan Clines, Carter Goodman and Max Keller; plus juniors Andrew Lusby and Austin Twehues; will join Max Runge, Braun and Cooney. BBHS allowed 1.57 goals per game last fall, while scoring at a rate of 2.7 per game. Ten newcomers join the squad and there will be 10 seniors. A total of 27 players are on the pre-season roster. The three-time defending 37th District champs have averaged 11.7 wins a year over the last 10 seasons. The Mustangs have had winning records in eight of those campaigns. In order for that trend to continue, two key things will need to happen. The team will need to find scoring from more than just Smith and Cooney will have to avoid growing pains as he adjusts to the full-time goalkeeping role. Ashland Blazer, Rowan County, Campbell County and George Rogers Clark will compete for the top spot.
