cummins' game-winner catapults polar bears
TAYLOR MILL | Jhace Cummins hit a game-winning 3-pointer from the left wing with 1.8 seconds to play to give visiting Bracken County a 62-59 victory over Calvary Christian on Saturday. It was the Polar Bears’ third consecutive win and fourth in five games, both season best marks, while the Cougars suffered their fifth defeat by five or fewer points this winter.
The hosts led for most of the game, including 29-26 at halftime. Bracken County (9-14) tied the score twice in the third quarter and took a 39-37 lead after Cayden Reed’s free throws with 53.8 seconds left in the period. Cross Dugan converted a three-point play 44.7 seconds later to return the advantage to Calvary Christian (11-10) just before the end of the quarter.
The lead changed hands multiple times in the final period before the score was tied for the final time at 59-59 setting up the final play. Cummins scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Blake Reed led the victors with 24 points. Noah Herald paced the Cougars with 23 points, while Dugan added 21.
