2021-22 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (20-5/14-0) – It is a splitting of the hairs that puts the Cardinals atop this year’s 1016sports’ preseason poll. Ashland Blazer is 55-5 over the last two seasons (vs. GRC’s 48-12) and enters the 2021-22 campaign with nearly as much firepower. However, coach Josh Cook’s team gets the edge due to the arrival of a pair of transfers: senior guard Tanner Walton (20.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, 58.3 field-goal percentage, 40.0 3-point field-goal percentage, 69.8 free-throw percentage) from Lexington Christian and junior guard Sam Parrish (16.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 44.0 FG%, 43 3-pointers, 34.7 3FG%, 71.8 FT%) from Tates Creek, both of which are being recruited by small college programs. The Cards also return junior guard Jerone Morton (22.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 48.9 FG%), who ranked 34th in the state in scoring and is on the radar of many Division I scouts. Senior point guard Aden Slone is a fourth individual with college offers on the table. Slone posted 11.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 49.1 FG%, 38 3-pointers, 40.9 3FG% last winter. However, GRC will need to replace the production of Jared Wellman (17.0 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 66 3-pointers, 47.8 FG%), who is now at Centre College; graduates Chris Morton (3.6 ppg), Reed Johnson and Dylan Gibson; and Jeremiah Mundy-Lloyd (3.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 44.4 FG%), who transferred to Bryan Station. In total, the Cardinals return nine players. Junior Trent Edwards (9.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 50.0 FG%) and senior Sammy Hernandez (2.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg) will share time on the wing, while senior forward Stanley Smothers (5.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 65.4 FG% -- 23rd in the state) will man the post. The only other returnee who saw significant time is sophomore guard Reshaun Hampton (2.8 ppg). The Cardinals ranked eighth in the state in both scoring (76.2 ppg) and scoring margin (17.7 ppg), as well as fifth in rebounding (36.4) and 36th in field-goal percentage (48.9) in 2020-21. The team will need to shore up its foul shooting (61.4 percent), which is its most glaring statistical weakness. Besides Ashland, 10th Region powerhouse Mason County and 14th Region upstart Wolfe County, are among the other frontrunners intent on dethroning the Cards.
