FLEMINGSBURG | Visiting Bourbon County raced out to a seven-point advantage in the first three minutes of its boys’ basketball season-opener with Fleming County and led for all but 14 seconds in claiming a 69-50 victory.
The speedy Colonels capitalized on 20 Panther turnovers and converted them into 17 points. Bourbon County finished the game with a 13-7 edge in steals, while giving the ball away just 12 times.
Bourbon County led 17-10 at the end of the opening quarter, but allowed the hosts to stay within striking distance throughout the remainder of the half before taking a 36-25 advantage into the locker room.
The Colonels opened the third period on a 9-1 run, but Fleming County answered and cut the margin back to 14 points by the end of the quarter.
Bourbon County put together another fast start in the final period as the lead swelled to 20 points after a Amari Faulkner steal and layup with 4:27 to play. The visitors extended their advantage to 24 with 2:16 remaining, before the hosts tallied the final five points.
The Colonels held a 31-27 advantage on the boards and out-shot the Panthers from the field (46.0 percent to 44.7 percent), 3-point range (40.0 percent to 33.3 percent) and foul line (75.0 percent to 50.0 percent). The visitors also took 12 more free throws (20 to eight).
Bourbon’s Jake Huckabee and Fleming’s Landen Lutz tied with a game-high 18 points. Lutz also added five rebounds. The Colonels’ KoKo Lukongo finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Amirion Joyce added 11 points, and Nakwan “Bone” Joyce collected a game best five steals.
Larkin McKee was the only other Panther to score in double figures after tallying 10 points. Daniel Watkins came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight rebounds.
