CAMPBELL'S BOYS, HARRISON'S GIRLS ADVANCE TO STATE QUARTERFINALS
PRE-TOURNAMENT NOTES: Back on Friday for the KHSAA Boys’ and Girls’ Team Bowling Championships at Lexington’s Collins Eastland Lanes. The boys’ competition starts at 7:50 a.m., with the girls beginning at 1:35 p.m.
Campbell County’s boys and Harrison County’s girls are the lone two area teams vying for a state title. Both squads have made multiple trips to the KHSAA Tournament.
The Camels finished fourth in last year’s qualifying round with a 1,269, but fell to Boone County in their Round of 16 match 192-220, 214-213, 215-184, 191-161. Henry Clay captured the title defeating Pleasure Ridge Park in four games. The Blue Devils did not qualify for this year’s tournament, although PRP did.
Campbell County took second at the 5th Region Tournament on Jan. 28. Highlands (1,247) and Campbell (1,225) finished one-two in the qualifying round and both advanced to the championship match, which the Bluebirds won 219-187, 266-158, 190-168.
The Camels have participated in the state tournament all five years the KHSAA has sponsored the event.
CCHS was seeded 11th out of qualifying in 2014 with a 1,099 and again dropped their Round of 16 match, that time against Highlands. In 2013, CC took third in qualifying with a score of 1,310, and then defeated Taylor County and Fleming County, before falling to eventual state champ Simon Kenton in three games in the semis.
The Camels best finish came in 2012. They advanced out the qualifying round with a 1,338 and a No. 2 seed then defeated John Hardin in the opening round of Baker-Tournament play, before dropping a five-game match to eventual runner-up Fern Creek in the quarterfinals. The Tigers won the final three games of the best-of-five series to pull off the upset.
Harrison County won the 7th Region title for the second straight year after disposing top-seeded Bryan Station in January’s tournament finals. The Fillies were the No. 2 seed after knocking down 1,068 pins in qualifying.
Like Campbell County’s boys, Harrison’s girls are making a repeat appearance in the state tournament. Last year, the Fillies finished the qualifying round with a 961 to earn a No. 12 seed, before reeling off tournament victories over West Jessamine and Lexington Catholic en route to a semifinal appearance. HCHS fell to eventual state champ Pleasure Ridge Park 180-180, 215-201, 161-146, 200-221, 179-150.
The Lady Panthers are back this year to defend their title. They also took the crown in 2012 and 2014 and were the runners-up in 2013.
Harrison did not qualify for the 2014 or 2012 state championships, but advanced to the quarterfinals in 2013 after being seeded fifth (1,036) with a victory over Cooper in the Round of 16. Male ended the Fillies’ run in four games in the quarterfinals.
Two of Harrison County’s team members competed in yesterday’s singles championships. Josie Vaughn was 15th with a 571, while Shelbi Morris was three spots back in 18th at 556.

area pair finish 15th at state singles championships
PRE-TOURNAMENT NOTES: Thursday at Lexington’s Collins Eastland Lanes for the KHSAA Boys’ and Girls’ Singles Bowling Championships, which begin at 10:10 a.m. I’ll be following Bishop Brossart’s Sam Fleissner, Bourbon County’s Logan Kerns, Fleming County’s Dylan Bellamy, Harrison County’s Gregory Dick and Montgomery County’s Damion Faulkner on the boys’ side; and Campbell County’s Kaylee Hitt, and Harrison County’s Shelbi Morris and Josie Vaughn in the girls’ competition.
It will be the fifth year the KHSAA is sponsoring a state bowling championship and the third consecutive year the event will be held at Collins Eastland Lanes.
Last year’s girls’ singles champ Sarah Doyle of Scott County is back to defend her title. Bourbon County’s Shane Dunsing, the 2015 boys’ titlest has graduated.
Dick is the most experienced of the five area boys competing. He was 22nd in 2015 (590) and 26th in 2013 (560) at the state singles event.
Morris and Vaughn both were members of the state semifinalist Fillie squad last winter, but are participating in the singles event for the first time. The pair also was on the Harrison County team that was a state quarterfinalist in 2013. Morris and Vaughn will be back for tomorrow’s team competition. Harrison County won the 7th Region team title on Jan. 28.
Two of the other area competitors were part of a state team qualifier. Kearns’ Colonels were quarterfinalists in 2013, while Faulkner’s Indians made the Round of 16 both in 2012 and 2013. None of this year’s singles entrants qualified for the 2014 state tournament.
The eight area individuals represent three different regions. Hitt was the 5th Region girls’ champ after posting a 949 in the qualifying round and then won the title with a 30-pin advantage (161-131) over Dayton’s Elizabeth Masminster in the stepladder finals. Fleissner earned an at-large state berth after finishing fourth with a 1058 in the 5th Region Tournament. He will be just the second Mustang boy to compete in the KHSAA singles’ championships.
Vaughn and Dick each finished as the individual runners-up at the 7th Region Championships, while Morris placed third and Kearns was fourth.
At the 8th Region Tournament, Bellamy finished as the runner-up. Faulkner claimed fourth place.
