2022 Preseason
1. Campbell County (16-16) – The Lady Camels were upended last year in the finals of the 10th Region Championship match by host Montgomery County. The Indians lost seven of their top nine players, while Campbell County graduated just one of its top eight. However, that personnel departure was a key one: senior outside hitter/right-side hitter Rylee McKinney (2.67 kills per set, 3.41 digs per set, 0.61 service aces per set, 0.47 assists per set and 0.23 blocks per set), the 10th Region Coaches Association Player of the Year and 1016sports’ runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. It will be a changing of the guard for the Lady Camels, who have a new coach this season in Jessica Ginter. It will be the team’s third head coach in three years. The departure of McKinley will open up new opportunities for up-and-coming standouts like 1016sports’ “Terrific 26 to Watch” members: juniors Ava Crowl (0.64 kps, 0.46 bps, 7.37 aps, 1.48 dps, 0.24 saps), a right-side hitter, and Emma Manser (2.52 dps, 0.65 bps, 0.55 dps, 0.43 saps), a middle blocker. Two other rising stars: junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Ella Thorwarth (1.11 kps, 2.19 dps) and junior middle blocker Lexi Scharold (1.34 kps, 0.54 bps) are also back. Two other key contributors who played in every match should factor in the mix as well. Sophomore setter Lucy Trapp (0.82 kps, 2.30 dps, 0.26 saps) and senior defensive specialist Ashlyn Niemeier (0.21 kps, 1.42 dps, 0.60 saps) saw significant action in 2020. The Lady Camels have no newcomers, but sophomore defensive specialist A’lon McIntyre (1.93 dps) and freshman setter/opposite hitter Hope Hamilton (0.61 dps, 0.32 aps) are promising young athletes. Senior outside hitter/right-side hitter Bailey Beiting played a major role in her first two seasons on the team, but saw the floor in only four sets last fall. Beiting and Niemeier are the only two seniors on the 12-woman roster. Campbell always plays a tough schedule and over the last few years has had mixed success, but within the 10th Region the club has boasted a 38-6 record since 2018. Last season’s Camels averaged 9.24 kps, 2.08 bps, 12.74 dpg, 8.57 aps and 2.52 saps, and just posted a 16-16 overall mark with McKinley as the regional Player of the Year. If this year’s club wants to continue to remain No. 1, it will have to find a way to at least match those statistics without the services of McKinley and under the guidance of its third coach in three years. That will be a significant challenge, but the Lady Camels have been in this position before. They’ve been the top-ranked team in the 1016sports’ preseason rankings five times in the last nine years (there were no pre-season rankings in 2021). Finishing at No. 1 will not be a cakewalk. Under the guidance of talented coach Katee Neltner, Boyd County, has become a force in the 16th Region and is a significant threat to Campbell’s top spot. Now entering her sixth season, Neltner’s Lady Lions have posted a 120-38 mark during her tenure and have improved their record each year. Russell and Scott should also contend for the spot atop the area, while challenging Boyd and Campbell, respectively, for their region’s title.
