2023 Preseason
1. Campbell County (13-4-7) – Given the significant personnel losses the Lady Camels had from 2022, expectations should have been lower than where they sit entering this year. However, the team steamrolled its way through its preseason scrimmages out-scoring its four quality opponents 19-2, including posting a perfect mark at the Bluegrass State Games, and therefore takes the top spot in the 1016sports’ 2023 preseason ranking. Longtime coach David Morris returns 15 players, but will have to replace 11 individuals; including leading scorer forward Ruby Dunlevy (19 goals, 12 assists, 50 points), who is now playing at Eastern Kentucky; midfielders Addie Schumacher (five goals, three assists, 13 points), Jeanelle Frimpong-Mansoh (three goals, two assists, eight points), Ambria Poynter (five goals, two assists, 12 points) and goalkeeper Morgan Rawe (5.4 saves per game, 0.9 goals allowed average, three shutouts). The Lady Comels scored 67 goals last season, but made their biggest mark on defense, where they allowed 21 in 23 games (they won their district tournament semifinal by forfeit). The latter total ranked CCHS ninth in the state at 0.913 goals per game. The squad accumulated nine shutouts in 2022 (36th-best in the state) and had a margin of victory of nearly two goals a game (44th in the state). Replacing Rawe will be the first order of business, but sophomore Morgan Roomes played seven games in the net last fall and did not allow a goal. Another sophomore, Abi Medaugh, also will challenge for time. Howeever, Medaugh did not see any action in a varsity game this past year. The scoring will likely be done by committee. In 2022, 15 of the 19 players on the team tallied at least one goal. That balance will again be a strength. The top returning scorer is 1016sports’ “Terrific 26 to Watch” honoree junior forward Jozie Holmes (14 goals, 10 assists, 38 points), the lone team member on that list. Sophomore forward Kennedy Crowley (six goals, two assists, 14 points), sophomore midfielder Ryan Weghorn (four goals, one assist, nine points) and senior midfielder Valerie Stephens (two goals, four assists, eight points) also return as key offensive contributors. Sophomore defender/midfielder Jillian Florimonte (19 games), sophomore Taylor Maley (three goals, six points), senior defender Alexandria Powell (one goal, two points), sophomore defender Kacie Thompson (one goal, two points) and junior defender Emma Westlund (one assist, one point) all return having played at least 17 games last fall. Defenders Julia Busam and Sophie Jones; and midfielders Madison Gamble, Isabella Menetrey and Ella Stahl, all had key roles last fall but have since graduated. Four true newcomers join the roster, three of which are freshmen. The quartet and the other four returnees who saw limited time will all need to step up to keep the Lady Camels in the hunt for a regional title. Campbell County advanced to the 10th Region finals last fall, before falling to Bishop Brossart 1-0. It was the sixth time in the last 10 years the squad competed in the championship game, having won it twice during that stretch. Over that time, coach Morris’ clubs have had only one losing season, while averaging 13 wins a year. East Carter regains a key player who missed the entire 2022 campaign and should again be a formidable force. Tenth Region champion Bishop Brossart and perennial power George Rogers Clark also will push Campbell for the top spot.
