inside-outside game propels bath past russell
OWINGSVILLE | Bath County combined hot-perimeter shooting and a powerful inside attack to defeat visiting Russell 74-65 on Saturday night and extend the team’s record to 9-3 in its last 12 games.
Brooks Williams kick started the hosts with three 3-pointers in the first three minutes and 10 seconds to give Bath County (12-10) an early lead. The Red Devils battled back and surged ahead 12-11 with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter after Max Cantrell scored off an offensive rebound. However, Russell (7-10) was held scoreless for the rest of the period as the Wildcats tallied the final eight points, including six on a pair of 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds of the period to take a 19-12 advantage.
Russell continued to fight through the second quarter and cut the margin to one after a Charlie Jachimczuk layup 32 seconds before halftime. Zack Otis followed by sinking a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining to give the hosts a three-point edge (34-31) at the break.
Jacob Patton stepped up in the second half and dominated the play in the paint, scoring 14 points as Bath County was able to push its lead out to 10 (51-41) by the end of the third quarter. The Wildcats out-scored the Red Devils 10-4 in the final three minutes and 50 seconds of the period.
Bath County continued to extend its advantage in the final quarter, leading by as many as 14 with 2:25 to play. Russell (7-10) was able to draw within eight with 43 seconds remaining after a Chuck Bechtel 3-pointer, but Devon Hunt’s free throw with 20 seconds left on the clock provided the final margin.
Four players from each team scored in double figures, led by 21 from Patton. Brooks Williams (17 points), Otis (16 points) and Evan Lyons (12 points) rounded out the quartet from Bath County. Bechtel paced Russell with 16 points, followed by Jachimczuk with 15, Tristan Miller with 13 and Cantrell with 11.
The Red Devils had a commanding advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Wildcats 36-23, but committed six more turnovers (15 to nine). Patton and Lyons each collected six rebounds to top the hosts. Cantrell led the visitors with 13 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive glass (including seven in the first half). Bechtel finished with seven rebounds.
“We came out and Brooks hit some shots early. I think he hit three 3’s right out of the gate. And then when they started to lock Brooks down, Evan Lyons hit some threes. And then when you are shooting that well from the perimeter it really makes Patton’s job a whole lot easier,” Bath County coach Bart Williams said. “Fortunately for us, we handled the ball pretty well and didn’t make a lot of mistakes, and then made enough free throws to get by down the stretch.”
