2017 Preseason
1. East Carter (37-2) – For the first time in the 1016sports’ era, a team enters the season as a state championship contender. Led by potentially the state’s all-time best softball player first-team All-American junior pitcher Montana Fouts (33-2, 0.48 ERA, 479 K, national best 14 no hitters, nine perfect games), the Lady Raiders return nine of 10 starters from last season’s squad that finished the regular season with an undefeated record. East Carter’s dominance extends beyond the circle, junior outfielder Taylor Jackson (.442), junior second baseman Eden Mayo (.440), Fouts (.438) and junior shortstop Madison Sparks (.417) each batted over .400 last spring. Three others hit better than .300 for coach Derek Calhoun’s club, which posted a .360 average as a group. The Lady Raiders were one of the final six before being eliminated at last year’s state tournament; it is reasonable to expect similar or better results this time.
