lewis, parker win EKC boys' golf championships
Rowan County’s Kobe Parker won a five-player playoff on the first hole to capture the title at the Eastern Kentucky Conference Boys’ Golf Championship on Monday at Eagle Trace in Morehead.
Parker recovered from a disastrous double bogey on his first hole to shoot a one-over par 37 and match his qualifying-round score in earning medalist honors. Parker played par golf the rest of the day, with the exception of birdying the par-5 561-yard ninth, to earn a spot in the playoffs along with Morgan County’s Blake Evans, Russell’s Ben Wilson, Bath County’s Resee Razor and Lewis County’s Kenny Draper.
Parker was the lone player of the group to card a par on the par-4, 391-yard, 18th hole in the playoffs. Draper and Evans each carded a five, while Razor and Wilson registered a six. Draper won the second hole of the playoff by one stroke over Evans to earn runner-up honors with a par on the par-4, 377-yard, first hole.
Lewis County, which also won last Tuesday’s EKC Eastern Qualifier, captured the team title for the first time in recent history with a 161, topping host Rowan County by 12 strokes. Russell finished third with a 174, followed by East Carter with a 176, defending champion Fleming County with a 179 and Nicholas County with a 197.

opening weekend
The opening weekend of KHSAA golf action featured several impressive performances by 10th and 16th Region teams. Twenty-four of the 30 boys’ squads and 15 of the 28 girls’ teams were in action in five tournaments that were dominated by area schools.
Friday kicked off the season with a boys’ and girls’ tournament at the Northern Kentucky Golf Course in Pendleton County, Rowan County’s boys’ tourney at Eagle Trace in Morehead, as well as Ashland’s girls’ tourney on its home course at Sandy Creek.
Then on Saturday, the boys were back in action at Grayson’s Hidden Cove hosted by Greenup County. Among the big winners of the weekend were Mason County’s boys and girls, Rowan’s girls, Elliott County’s Ryan Gillum, and Mason’s Tyler Lippert and Sarah Fite.
Mason was clearly the most dominant school, winning all three competitions in which the Royals and Lady Royals entered. The girls were victorious at Pendleton by 40 strokes (337), with Lady Royals claiming four of the top-seven individual spots and Fite distancing herself from the field with a 5-stroke victory (77).
On the boys’ side, Mason (306) won the Pendleton Invite by 31 strokes with teammates Lippert (70) and BJ Knox (73) finishing one-two. At Greenup’s tournament, Mason (315) defeated runner-up Ashland by five strokes and third-place Elliott by 11.
Gillum won both events in which he competed (firing a 70 at Eagle Trace and a 69 at Hidden Cove), while Lippert put in a pair of strong finishes with a three-stroke, 2-under par victory in Northern Kentucky and then firing a 72 to claim runner-up honors the next day at Hidden Cove.
Paintsville won at Eagle Trace with a 311, but Ashland scored strongly with a 313 on the collegiate course. The Tomcats demonstrated depth with Tate Justus taking second in Morehead with a 72 and Harrison Hall tying for third at Hidden Cove with a 74.
Elliott also had a strong weekend, taking third at Hidden Cove with a 326 and fourth with a 324 at Eagle Trace.
In Friday’s girls’ tournament at Sandy Creek in Ashland, Morgan County’s Morgan Markwell carded an 81 to claim medalist honors, topping Greenup’s Abby Dowdy and Montgomery County’s Holly Haydon each by one stroke. As a team, Rowan (377) dominated the field winning the event by 23 strokes over Morgan’s Lady Cougars.
