2018-19 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (29-5) – A year after the star-studded Cardinals fell short of a regional title and its first trip to the state tournament since 2012, coach Josh Cook’s club has reloaded for another deep postseason run. Returning are 1016sports’ Players to Watch senior wing Brennan Canada (13.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 48 3FG, 69.4 FT%), senior guard Jordan Graham (11.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 74.1 FT%) and sophomore wing Jared Wellman, as well as key reserves senior center Ben Jackson, senior forwards Jehdon Jenkins and Nitavius Thomas, and junior guard KJ Rucker. This year’s team also gains the services of junior forward Lincoln Bush, a transfer from Frederick Douglass, and welcomes a pair of talented freshmen (wing Jerone Morton and point guard Hagan Harrison) to the varsity. The Cards remain tall and athletic, but will need to find replacements for forwards Will Philpot and J.J. Johnson, and guards Ryan Cooper and Chase Taylor. Those losses comprised a major portion of the team’s rebounding and outside shooting, respectively. The hope is that Jackson and Bush will hit the boards and fortify the play in the paint, while Morton, Harrison and Wellman can bolster the team’s perimeter game by hitting outside shots. Coach Cook’s club will be deep with all 14 players on the roster capable of contributing on any given night. Twelve of the team members are over six-feet tall and there are eight seniors. Offensively, GRC’s strength will come from its post game. Last year, the Cardinals averaged 69 ppg and shot 48.2 percent from the field. The biggest challenge is expected to come from defending 10th Region champs and state quarterfinalists Campbell County, which won both meetings last year, once in Winchester and the regional tourney semifinals, and will feature key returnees Reid Jolly, Drew Wilson and Tanner Lawrence.
