2019 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (14-8-2) – The Lady Cards can score and do so at a high rate, but their success this season may depend on how well they can defend. Last fall, George Rogers Clark tallied a whopping 246 points (95 goals/4.0 per game and 56 assists/2.3 per game). Ten players registered at least nine points last season and eight of them return, including the top three in point production: junior forward Allie Bush (25 goals/8 assists/58 points), senior forward/midfielder Delaney Manning (22 goals/12 assists/56 points) and junior midfielder Leslie Hernandez (13 goals/6 assists/32 points). All three are among the 1016sports’ “Terrific 26 to Watch”. Junior midfielder Julia Pohl (16 points), junior midfielder Shelby Vaughn (15 points), junior defender/midfielder Talen Spargo (13 points), junior defender Caitlin Fike (nine points) and sophomore forward/midfielder Lakyn Griffith (nine points) were the next in line among the returnees, of which there are 16. Coach Matthew Abner’s Lady Cards have won three consecutive regional titles, averaging 16 wins per year for a 48-17-5 overall record. However, during that stretch, the team has been bounced from the state tournament in the first round by a combined score of 10-1. The 2018 club yielded 48 goals (2.0 per game), so shoring up the defense will be key to reversing that trend. Abner will need to find a replacement in goal for Brooklyn Johnson, one of the team’s three graduates from 2018. A pair of freshmen, Ruthie Houston and Carrie Stevens, are the frontrunners to take on that role. If the Lady Cards falter, there are a handful of talented clubs poised to move up to the top slot. Virtually every team in the preseason’s top 10 returns a formidable lineup and is capable of challenging for area supremacy.
