2021-22 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (18-6/9-2) – Coach Robbie Graham’s Lady Cards return 11 of 12 players who played in half of last season’s games, a factor that helps them ascend to the top of the 1016sports’ preseason rankings. To boot, GRC had its string of four successive 10th Region titles snapped in 2020-21, which should serve as ample motivation for it to get back on the throne. Junior guard/forward Brianna Byars is the squad’s top returnee and is garnering multiple Division I offers. Byars averaged 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last winter, while shooting 48.7 percent from the field. Junior guard Trinity Gay and senior forward Tyra Flowers also return as key contributors. Gay averaged 9.0 ppg and 2.3 rpg, and is the team’s top 3-point shooter (29-of-76 for 38.2 percent), while Flowers adds 8.9 ppg and 7.2 rpg, while shooting 41.2 percent from the floor. Flowers recently committed to play at Division I North Alabama. The Lady Cards’ lineup is full of experienced players. However, there are no newcomers listed on their preseason roster. Point guard Erica Berry (4.7 ppg) is the lone regular who departed after last season. Yet, her contributions can be made up by a number of players, including freshman guard Ciara Byars (6.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg), senior guard Asja-Li Garrard (4.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg), senior guard Nicole Davis, junior guard Maddie Zeek and sophomore guard Makili Tabor. Senior forward Amber Miller, sophomore guard/forward KeAsia Parker and junior forward Cassie Flannery will bolster the lineup in the frontcourt. GRC’s assets are its physical attributes: athleticism, strength and size. Depth is also a major bonus, with Graham able to play 10 a night. The team’s Achilles’ heel is its free-throw shooting, connecting on only 60.2 percent of its attempts last year. On the whole, GRC is not a great shooting team. Last winter’s club converted 41.5 percent of its field-goal tries and 28.8 percent of its 3-point shots. The Lady Cards will be pushed by Montgomery County, which was the 2020-21 10th Region runner-up and returns eight of its top nine players, as well as traditional powers Rowan County, Mason County and Russell.
