2022-23 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (31-3) – For the fourth time in the last five rankings (there were none done in 2020-21), GRC sits atop the preseason list. Ten players return for coach Robbie Graham’s squad, which has won five of the last six 10th Region titles. Sisters Ciara and Brianna Byars lead the way. Ciara, a freshman guard, was the “1016sports’ Player of the Year” last season after posting per-game averages of 17.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, while adding shooting percentages of 51.0 (field goal), 28.8 (3-point) and 73.5 (free throw), while leading her team with 32 3-pointers. She has already received five Division I offers. Older sister, Brianna, recently committed to play for Cincinnati next season. She finished the 2021-22 campaign with 15.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg and a 47.3 field-goal percentage, Both Byars’ girls are among the “1016sports’ Terrific 26 to Watch,” with eighth-grade point guard Kennedy Stamper (5.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 24 3-pointers, 72.1 free-throw percentage) joining the pair as the team’s third returning starter. The Lady Cards will have to replace starting forwards Tyra Flowers (8.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Asja-li Garrard (3.6 ppg, 1.7 rpg). According to coach Graham, Flowers, who is now playing at North Alabama, was the club’s top defender. Another key contributor, forward Amber Miller (2.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 48.1 field-goal percentage) has also graduated. With those three gone, depth will be an issue for the Lady Cards. Sixth woman, senior guard Trinity Gay (5.0 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 29 3-pointers), junior guard Makili Tabor (2.5 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 40.5 field-goal percentage), junior wing KeAsia Parker (1.0 ppg,1.1 rpg), freshman guard Jaylynn Goodwin (1.3 ppg, 1.1 rpg) and sophomore guard Madelyn Settles (1.1 ppg) will look to fill the gaps and contend for starting roles. Five newcomers join the squad this season. Graham says freshman guard Anaya Chestnut is likely to make the biggest impact. The Lady Cardinals connected on only 26.4 percent of their 3-point shots and 62.1 percent of their free throws last winter, both numbers which will need to be improved upon in order to contend for district and regional titles, as well as make a deep run in the state tournament. The team did convert on 42.9 percent of its total shots from the floor, which ranked 30th in the KHSAA. No Lady Card finished among the state leaders in any individual category, but the team sat among the top 50 in four areas, including 17th in scoring at 61.8 ppg, eighth in points allowed at 38.2 per game, second in margin of victory at 23.6 ppg, as well as the aforementioned field-goal percentage. The squad will be among the most athletic in the state, but will need to find replacements for the players who have graduated and hope that the newcomers are able to contribute early. Depth and shooting will be issues. The team also lacks the across-the-board size it has had the last few years, but it will still feature both a tall and physically-strong lineup. There will be two seniors and four juniors on the 17-player roster,. Boyd County and Russell will provide the greatest challenge to GRC’s hold on the top spot, but Montgomery County, Ashland Blazer, Rowan County and Mason County should also be formidable this winter.
