2022 Preseason
1. Harrison County (32-6) – Recently inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame, coach Mac Whitaker knows a thing or two about winning. The Thorobreds return 16 players who saw time at the plate or on the mound, led by a quartet of All-1016 players: senior outfielder Gunner Cole (.333 batting average, 19 RBI, 26 runs, three doubles, nine walks, 20 strikeouts, 11 stolen bases), junior pitcher/first baseman J.D. Kendall .368 batting average, six RBI, six runs, plus 7-0, 1.38 ERA, 38 hits, 39 strikeouts, nine walks in 45.2 innings), sophomore first baseman/pitcher Corey Vaughn (.450, 49 RBI, 43 runs, 17 doubles, three triples, six homers, 15 walks, 19 strikeouts, five stolen bases, plus 3-1, 3.58, 23 hits, 27 strikeouts, 21 walks in 29.1 innings) and junior outfielder/pitcher Cameron White (.360, 33 RBI, 40 runs, nine doubles, one triple, two homers, 18 walks, 11 strikeouts and 14 stolen bases, plus a 1-0 record and a 5.04 ERA in 8.1 innings). Only four who contributed are gone and the only one whose statistics will be difficult to replace is pitcher Connor Kilpela (5-1, 1.84 ERA, 38 hits, 46 strikeouts, 10 walks in 45.2 innings). The ‘Breds batted .346 as a team last spring. Eight of the 11 players who had more than 35 at-bats and played in more than 20 games hit over .300. The team’s other top batters include sophomore middle infielder Elijah Harris (.311 batting average, 26 walks and 18 stolen bases), sophomore third baseman Mason Smiley (.360 batting average, 27 RBI, 27 runs and 21 walks) and freshman outfielder Jashon Lewis (.395 batting average, 19 RBI, nine doubles, 18 walks and 12 stolen bases). Harrison’s pitchers posted a 2.96 team ERA, with 254 strikeouts and 103 walks in 248 innings. All but Kilpela and Austin Nichols (5-0, 2.62 ERA, 22 strikeouts and seven walks in 24 innings) return. Kendall will be the squad’s ace, with sophomore outfielder/pitcher Braxton Grubb (4-2 with 1 save, a 4.14 ERA, 46 hits, 68 strikeouts and 23 walks in 44 innings) likely as the No. 2. Vaughn and junior third baseman/pitcher Jacob Craycraft (3-0, 2.57 ERA 16 strikeouts in 16.1 innings) also return. Harrison County has always done a great job of developing young talent who can step in right away as middle schoolers. There are a total of three seventh and eighth-graders on this year’s team. There’s a good chance at least one will be a contributor in the very near future. The ‘Breds do not appear to have any weaknesses on the field. However, the team is very young with only one senior on the 25-man roster. That inexperience could be a factor. The biggest challenge to Harrison should come from within its own district. Nicholas County returns eight key players, including four of its top five pitchers and six of the seven regulars who batted over. 300 last spring on a 24-win team. East Carter and Greenup County figure to be the next tier with both challenging to be the 16th Region’s representative to the state tournament.
