2019-20 Preseason
1. Ashland Blazer (18-11) – A new era is dawning. George Rogers Clark and Boyd County each graduated multiple key players off their teams which advanced through the state tournament the past several years. So now it is Ashland Blazer’s turn to step to the top rung. Coach Bill Bradley’s team returns four starters, three of which averaged double-digit points, and seven total letter winners, and also brings in a pair of transfers from Russell in twins sophomore guards Casey and Lindsay Wallenfeltz. The Kittens have outside shooting in senior guard Julia Parker (15.8 points per game, 41.4 percent field-goal shooting, 77 3-pointers, 81.8 free-throw percentage), post play from the coach’s daughter senior forward Morgan Bradley (11.7 ppg, 7.8 rebounds per game, 57.6 FG%) and sophomore center Mikayla Martin (10.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 56.3 FG%), and key role players in senior guard Jada Miller (3.9 ppg. 30 3FGs), junior guard Carley Cullop (4.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg) and senior forward Sydney Sorrell (3.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 51.2 FG%). The team’s two 2019 graduates: Emma Fulton and Miranda Martin, combined to average 7.9 ppg and 6.9 rpg and are the lone letter winners not returning. Freshman guard Jenna Adkins will take over Fulton’s role at the point. The Kittens’ strength is shooting. Last year’s club finished 40th in the state in both field-goal percentage (42.7) and free-throw percentage (65.8), and 50th in 3-point field-goal percentage (31.9). In individual statewide rankings, Bradley (20th) and Martin (29th) led the way in overall shooting, while Parker was 17th at the foul line and 23rd from behind the arc. In 2018-19, Ashland only posted an 11-8 mark within the 16th Region with all of the losses coming against the top four clubs. If the Kittens want to stay atop the 1016sports’ rankings, they will need to beat those teams this season. Keeping turnovers down, especially with a new, young point guard, and getting more perimeter production from players other than Parker, will be key to determining how good Ashland can be. Parker, Bradley and Martin are all 1016sports’ Players to Watch, while Casey Wallenfelz was a 1016sports’ Future Star in 2017-18. Five teams enter the season just a hair behind the Kittens in the race for the top spot, but the best challenge figures to come from Russell which won 27 games last winter, has two 1016sports’ Players to Watch and returns eight of 10 letter winners from 2018-19.
