VANCEBURG | Lewis County led for all but one minute of Thursday’s 63rd District home game against Raceland in pulling out a 50-33 girls’ basketball win on a night in which the Lady Lions honored former coach Kevin Lewis.
Lewis coached the LCHS girls from 1995-2002. Many of Lewis’ former players were on hand for the event.
The win was fifth in the last six games for Lewis County, which drew its record to .500 for the first time this season at 6-6.
The hosts scored the game’s first basket and stretched their lead to 5-2, before the Lady Rams tied the score on a Kierston Smith 3-pointer at the 2:13 mark of the opening period. The score remained 5-5 for the next minute until Aliyah Horsley put Lewis County back in front with a 3-pointer of her own with 1:13 remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Lions stretched the advantage out to nine points at 20-11 with 2:58 to play until halftime, but Raceland scored the next five points to send the teams into the locker room with Lewis County leading 20-16.
Raceland (4-7) drew within three points at 22-19 after an Emilee Garvin 3-pointer a minute and 20 seconds into the third quarter. However, the hosts out-scored the Lady Rams 12-6 the rest of the period.
Sarah Paige Weddington’s basket at the 6:57 mark of the fourth quarter pushed Lewis County’s lead into double digits for the first time at 38-28.
