2019 Preseason
1. Ashland Blazer (11-2) – No team might have benefitted more from the KHSAA’s realignment and redistricting than the Tomcats, who dropped out of Class 4A and away from a district with nemesis Johnson Central (which has eliminated it in the third-round of the state playoffs for the last three seasons), and into 3A where it instantly becomes a threat to challenge for a state title. Coach Tony Love’s group’s prowess begins up front where it features dominant offensive and defensive lines, that include seniors Cameron Marushi, Dane Wardle, Gary Swiney and John Stone (among others). There’s no shortage of talent at the skill positions either, headlined by junior running back/defensive back Keontae Pittman (103 rushes for 1040 yards, 15 touchdowns), senior running back/wide receiver/defensive back Blake Hester (78 rushes for 594 yards, 16 TDs; 24 receptions for 431 yards, 4 TDs; 74 tackles, 5 tackles for loss) and senior wide receiver/defensive back Andy Layne (23 receptions for 394 yards, 5 TDs). The Tomcats also have at their disposal defensive standouts senior linebacker/running back Steele Workman (115 tackles, 3 TFLs) and junior linebacker/running back Caleb Tackett (138 tackles, 12 TFLs). Coach Love’s biggest issue will be to find a replacement for four-year starting quarterback Braxton Ratliff. Junior Jake Gregg, sophomore Landon Eden and freshman Jules Farrow are the signal callers listed on the team’s preseason roster. Gregg, who did not play last season won the job in preseason camp. With 20 seniors on the 2019 roster, most of Ashland’s top players are in their final season, so this might be the team’s best chance to challenge for a state title in the near future. Raceland lost a lot of key contributors to graduation, but the Rams always seem to have talent waiting in the wings and should again be in the mix to challenge for the top spot in the area.
