2017-18 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (30-5) – The 2016-17 Lady Cards won a regional title, but the 2017-18 edition of the team should be better. With its core group now together for one complete season, this is the year the squad targeted to make a deep run in the state tournament. The Lady Cards have five legitimate stars, several talented youngsters and multiple players to fill in where needed. Still a young group, there are only two seniors listed in the region’s preseason media guide and forward Shemaya Behanan (11.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is the only one who contributed significant minutes last year. Junior guards Jasmine Flowers (9.6 ppg, 2.7 rpg) and Hayley Harrison (9.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and junior forward Maleaha Bell (8.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg) are all on the radars of college coaches. So too is sophomore guard Kennedy Igo (12.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg), giving GRC five solid college prospects. Junior guard Aliyah Gray adds depth, while a pair of sophomore guards—Shelbi Wilson and Liz Hale—and eighth-graders—forward Tyra Flowers and guard Cameron Anderson—will keep the Lady Cards’ future bright. George Rogers Clark’s roster is full of tall and quick athletes, which makes the team a defense force while still giving coach Robbie Graham multiple scoring options. Last season’s squad ranked among the state leaders in field goal percentage (46.5) and margin of victory (19.5 ppg). That club also averaged 64.8 points and 31.6 rebounds per game and gave state champ Mercer County a battle in last year’s KHSAA quarterfinals. This year’s club has all of the tools to reach that level or go higher. However, Campbell County and Boyd County also have highly-talented squads which should challenge the Lady Cards for area supremacy.
