2018 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (23-10) – New head coach Matt Puckett inherits seven starters off a team which won the 10th Region and advanced to the state tournament. Highlighting that group is second-team all-state senior third baseman/shortstop Peyton (Cameron) Dove (.323 BA), and preseason all-state selections senior first baseman/pitcher Tyler Walton (.376) and senior pitcher/third baseman Jake Ware (8-1, 2.00, 94 K, .407 BA). Two other key returnees also batted better than .300 – sophomore second baseman/pitcher Dakota Puckett (.420) and junior outfielder/pitcher Caden Easterling (.354) – while Ware and Walton also have home run power. The Cardinals relied upon defense and pitching to get to the 2017 state tournament, but this season hitting might be their best strength. Senior outfielder Bo Billings and junior catcher Brady Turner are the other two returning starters and both contribute solid bats. Besides Ware, Easterling and Alex Kretzer return as the top pitchers. After that, coach Puckett will turn to a young group on the mound. Seven freshmen are listed as primary pitchers on the pre-season roster. However, the team is not without experience. Over half of GRC’s squad (six seniors and nine juniors) are upperclassmen. Since that group has been in high school, the Cardinals have compiled a 61-37 record.
