2019-20 Preseason
1. Montgomery County (18-12) – Going way off the radar with this prediction, one which most likely will not be anyone else’s choice, but with an intriguing roster the Indians sit atop this year’s ranking. Although Montgomery County’s lineup is still a mystery, coach Steve Wright enters his first year with a pair of high-level transfers in six-foot-nine senior forward Zach Benton and 6-6 junior forward Rickey Lovette. Benton averaged 10.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season at Ryle, while Lovette notched 15.6 ppg and 9.5 rpg, shooting 52.1 percent from the field, at Avon Park, Fla. Both are among “1016sports’ Terrific 26 To Watch”. In his career, Wright has won 697 games at four Kentucky high schools, including collecting the 2005 state title at South Laurel. Most recently, he spent two years as an assistant at Transylvania. He also was an assistant at Florida’s Division II Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2016-17. With his pedigree of success and his ties to the collegiate game, expect Montgomery County to win, win a lot and win early in his tenure at the school. Simply put, the odds are the Indians are going to be very good this year. Remember this is the school Happy Osborne took to the state semifinals in his lone year with the program. The team’s top three scorers graduated after 2019, a group that accounted for 56 percent of the offense and 50 percent of the rebounding. Without question they are significant losses, but this will be a new and much different team. The Indians have more talent than just Benton and Lovette. Seven players return, including senior forward Trey Ishmael, senior guard Austin Eichenberger (5.7 ppg), junior guards Brandon Dyer (4.5 ppg) and Caleb Webb, junior forward J.T. Woosley, and sophomore guards Hagan Harrison (5.8 ppg) at the point and Trey Carroll as a defensive specialist. Harrison is the only full-time starter back from last winter, although Eichenberger played in every game. A handful of others who either did not suit up last season or saw limited roles will fill out the roster. Will that be enough to propel the Indians to the top? Ashland Blazer is coming off a surprising state quarterfinal finish and is gaining one of the state’s top freshmen in Elliott County transfer Collin Porter, while six other teams also return enough firepower to challenge Montgomery for the No. 1 spot.

1 spot.
