ohio all-stars use defense to topple kentucky
Lawrence County, Ohio, used a staunch defense to better the 16th Region in Sunday’s senior all-star volleyball match at South Point (Ohio) High School. The Ohio All-Stars tallied 15 blocks in a 25-22, 25-19,19-25,17-25,15-10 victory.
The Ohio squad jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the opening game, but the Kentuckians rallied and closed with a point at 23-22, before the hosts used a kill and a Kentucky hitting error to capture the game.
The visitors turned the tables in the second game as they scored the first five points. Kentucky led by as many as seven at 11-4, but Ohio used a 15-6 run, capitalizing on the visitors’ hitting miscues, to knot the score at 18-18. After a Kentucky time out, the hosts kept up the pressure and finished the game on a 6-2 run.
The two teams played evenly throughout the first half of the third game. Russell’s Emma Ison reeled off five service aces during a 6-0 Kentucky run to put the visitors ahead 18-12. Kentucky stretched the advantage to seven points, before claiming the 25-19 win.
The fourth game started like the third, but for the most part, the Ohio club was able to maintain a lead until the visitors tied the contest at 13-13. A Courtney Wright kill at 17-16 gave Kentucky its first edge since the score was 4-3. The visitors continued to use strong serving down the stretch to pull the match even at two games apiece.
Ohio roared to a 10-1 advantage in the fifth game, but Kentucky battled and closed to within four at 14-10. Olivia Abner’s kill sealed the victory for the hosts.
Kentucky used a powerful attack to post a 47-35 advantage in kills and a 28-12 edge in service aces, but Ohio countered with its strong net play to earn the win.
Chesapeake’s Atiya Spaulding collected 12 kills, with South Point’s Abner adding 11 to lead the hosts. Greenup County’s Kaitlin Moore matched Spaulding with 12 kills. Lewis County’s Wright and Ashland’s Shannon Card each contributed 10. Russell’s Ison and Cassie Fultz, and Greenup’s Kaitlin Eastham each tallied seven aces to lead the visitors. Chesapeake’s Carley Lester had five aces to pace the home side.
The Gallia Academy tandem of Jordan Walker and Hannah Johnson finished with nine and eight blocks, respectively.
