AUGUSTA | Behind an effective inside-outside game, visiting Montgomery County out-scored host Augusta 14-7 in the third quarter to pull away from the Panthers en route to claiming a 58-48 victory on Wednesday.
In an evenly-played first half, the margin never exceeded four points, which was the difference at halftime (30-26). However, Montgomery County (14-11) scored eight points in the paint and added six on the perimeter in the decisive third period, while also locking down the Panthers defensively, to keep the hosts at bay.
The Indians led for all but 15.5 seconds of the first quarter, eventually finishing with a 17-15 edge. Augusta (12-12) held the advantage four times in a second period that included six lead changes, before Montgomery County closed out the half on a 6-0 run to move ahead for good.
Cameron White hit a 3-pointer with 5:55 to play in the third quarter to draw the hosts within three. However, it was Augusta’s last basket for more than three minutes as the visitors went on an 8-0 run.
