Lady cards' balance proves too much for bracken
Maaliya Owens (14) and Lauren Welsh (10) each scored in double figures to help No. 9 George Rogers Clark to a 72-57 home victory over No. 7 Bracken County (16-6). The Lady Bears defeat was just their second since Dec. 21 and first on the road against a regional foe this year.
Flowers and Owens opened the night with a combined 11 points as the Lady Cardinals built a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. The pair also clamped down defensively and held the region’s top scorer, Bailey Cummins, to just four points in the first period and 10 at halftime.
However, the Lady Bears cut into the margin by out-scoring the hosts 13-9 in the second quarter and trailed by just four at halftime.
Both teams opened up their offenses in the second half as Owens added seven third-quarter points to push the Lady Cards’ advantage into double digits at 54-42.
George Rogers Clark tallied nearly half of its points in the final period at the free-throw line as the team shot 8-for-10 to stave off a late Bracken County comeback. The Lady Bears keyed that run by making 12-of-15 foul shots in the second half.
Cummins led all scorers with 19 points. Madison Kalb scored 13 points despite battling an illness. Fourteen of the 15 individuals who saw action in the game scored.
The victory raised GRC’s series record against Bracken County to 6-0 since 2000.

Nicholas County’s girls’ basketball team out-scored Harrison County 20-5 in the second quarter of Friday’s 38th District home doubleheader and never looked back in cruising to a 51-30 victory, its first of the season.
After allowing more than 50 points in their opening three contests, coach Greg Letcher praised the Lady Jackets’ defense.
Nicholas County (1-3) held Harrison County (2-4) to just 11 points by halftime as it built a commanding 27-11 advantage.
Neither team could find its offense in the opening period as the Lady Jackets held a slim 7-6 lead, but the second quarter was a different story.
The inside-outside attack by Trina Hughes and Allison Howard combined to score 40 percent of the team’s points.
A big part of the Lady Jackets’ success came from moving the ball on offense. The squad finished with 18 assists on 21 total baskets.
The hosts padded their lead and stretched it as high as 22 points in the third quarter. Again, the defense proved to be critical, holding the Fillies to just eight points.
The Lady Jackets’ advantage peaked at 25 (51-26) after a Shelby Stafford 3-pointer with 3:15 to play in the contest.
All 16 Lady Jackets that suited up got into the game.
Nicholas County dominated the boards, corralling 34 to just 23 for Harrison County. The Lady Jackets had as many defensive rebounds as the Fillies had total.
Hughes paced the squad with 12 points, while adding six rebounds. Howard finished with nine points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Grace Kiskaden contributed seven points, while Amber Martin and Samantha Sowell each added six. Martin also grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
Madison Philpott (10 points, five rebounds, four steals) and Madison Kellione (11 points, three rebounds, three steals) were the only real bright spots for the Fillies, frustrating coach Kimberly Furnish.
The Nicholas County Bluejackets dropped the second game of the night to Harrison County 77-47.
