2018 Preseason
1. Ashland (10-3) – In a district that includes perennial state power Johnson Central, 2018 may turn out to be Ashland’s year. Coach Tony Love’s Tomcats return talent at the skill positions and retain the size up front that helped the team reach its 2017 successes. Braxton Ratliff, Blake Hester, Keontae Pittman, Isaac Caines and Russell Rogers return at the skill positions. Blocking for that group will be seniors Marcus Maynard, Isaiah Hanks and Caleb Skaggs, and juniors Junior Jones and Dane Wardle, each of whom played in at least 11 games last fall. However, it all starts with Ratliff, the senior quarterback who is entering his third year as a starter and was 114-for-197 for 1745 yards through the air with 22 TDs and just six interceptions in 2017. Ratliff is equally a threat on the ground last year running for 762 yards on 137 carries and scoring 15 TDs. One of Ratliff’s top receivers is senior Isaac Caines, who had 25 catches for 473 yards last fall. Versatile senior tight end/defensive end Russell Rogers also added 244 receiving yards in 2017. Junior running back Blake Hester is another bonus to the ground game. Last season, he ran 120 times for 773 yards. Sophomore running back Keontae Pittman is an exceptional talent and is the team’s future at the position. Junior Jones, a defensive lineman, leads an impressive defense that also includes senior defensive end Chance Lomelo, senior linebackers Drew Fannin and Braedon Ward, senior defensive backs Gage Hignite and Ryan Spinda, and junior defensive back Andy Layne. That group helped hold the team’s 2017 opponents to just over 219 yards per game. Senior Caleb Jackson is likely to take over the kicking duties this season. Raceland, last year’s Class A state runner-up, should push the Tomcats for the top spot.
