four area girls compete at state meet
LEXINGTON | Four area swimmers took to the pool at the University of Kentucky’s Lancaster Aquatics Center for six races of the girls’ portion of the Pannell Swim Shop/KHSAA State Championship on Friday.
All four also participated in the 2019 meet, with Boyd County’s Abby Christian and Fleming County’s Leia Grannis each making her third consecutive state-championship appearance.
Grannis’ younger sister, eighth-grader Ariel, posted the best overall finish by placing 22nd in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:01.60, missing a spot in the evening finals by 1.32 seconds. She entered Friday’s race as event’s lowest seed.
In the 100-yard butterfly, the younger Grannis also bettered both last year’s state finish and her 2020 qualifying time of 1:02.30, by placing 35th in 1:02.18. Last year, she finished 38th in 1:03.88.
Junior Leia Grannis also dropped time off her qualifying mark, but still finished 39th in the 100-yard breaststroke. In a fast race, she clocked 1:11.68, a nearly two-second improvement from the regionals.
Christian competed in two events, placing 39th in the 100-yard freestyle (56.52) and 40th in the 50-yard free (25.62). The Boyd County freshman sliced 1.24 seconds off her 100y regional time and an impressive six-tenths of a second off her mark in the splash-and-dash 50y race. At the 2019 state meet, Christian was 36th in the 50y free in 26.15.
Like the others, Russell sophomore Jasmine Webb cut a considerable chunk off her qualification time (57.15) and finished 36th in the 100y free in 55.56.
The boys’ competition takes place Saturday at the Lancaster Aquatics Center with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m.
