2023 Preseason
1. Campbell County (10-16) – It has been a few years since the Lady Camels finished atop the area, but the club is familiar with high preseason expectations. This is the sixth time since the 1016sports’ rankings began in 2013 (there were no rankings in 2021) when it started atop the heap. The team is on its fourth coach in four seasons and has not had a winning campaign since going 20-16 in 2019. That also was the last season in which the club made the state tournament. However, the good news for this fall is that its top seven players return. Those who are not back participated in just 148 out of the 760 total sets played. There are five newcomers to the roster, but they are all in high school: one senior, two juniors and two sophomores. The Lady Camels went 4-3 against regional foes last fall, including a 2-2 mark against the 10th champ Bishop Brossart. Last year’s Lady Camels posted a 4-2 mark at home. This year’s schedule includes 10 matches in its own facility, so that should help as new coach Mikah Freppon adjusts to the helm. Three team members are on the 1016sports’ “Terrific 26 to Watch” list, including senior setter/right-side hitter Ava Crowl (5.43 assists per set, 2.94 digs per set, 0.48 blocks per set, 0.31 service aces per set), senior middle blocker Lexi Scharold (3.04 kills per set, 0.65 bps) and senior middle blocker Emma Manser (3.28 kps, 0.75 bps,, 0.28 saps). The latter two have already committed to playing volleyball at Division II colleges in 2024. Scharold will attend Minnesota-Crookston and Manser will head to the recently renamed Wheeling (W.Va.) University. Campbell County stands out for its defensive prowess. Last fall, the squad ranked in the state in digs per set (32nd at 17.61) and blocks per set (43rd at 2.33). Two individuals are key to maintaining their proficiency in those areas: senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Ella Thorwarth (4.47 dps, 0.28 sapg) and junior defensive specialist A lon McIntyre (3.01 dps, 0.61 saps). Two other key contributors also return in sophomore setter/opposite hitter Hope Hamilton (0.36 bps, 2.58 aps, 1.86 dps) and senior outside hitter/right-side hitter Pennie Stacey (1.04 dps). Offensively, the club averaged 8.69 kps, 7.96 aps and 2.05 saps in 2022. The Lady Camels lost little offense off of last year’s team, but will still need to find more players who can contribute in addition to Scharold and Manser, who accounted for more than 70 percent of the team’s kills. Three players are not back: defensive specialist Ashlyn Niemeier (2.48 dps, 0.32 saps), outside hitter/right-side hitter Bailey Beiting (0.79 kps, 0.96 dps) and setter/outside hitter Lucy Trapp (1.89 kps, 3.26 dps, 0.30 saps). Trapp only played in 10 matches and 27 sets over the first 11 contests of the year, so the members of the squad which finished the season were accustomed to performing without her contributions. Trapp, a junior, has since transferred to Ryle. Two other players are also back and will be joined by five newcomers. The lack of quality depth will be a challenge for coach Freppon, so the squad will need to quickly develop additional weapons. Expect the Lady Camels to get a stiff challenge from Wolfe County for the top spot. The Lady Wolves and their powerful offense ranked in the state’s top 50 last year in service aces per set (34th at 3.9) and kills per set (37th at 10.5). Defending 10th Region champ Bishop Brossart should also be formidable. Several other 10th Region foes (Harrison County, Scott, George Rogers Clark and Bourbon County) also will be strong, while Boyd County, Rowan County and Raceland should be the class of the 16th.
