2017 Preseason
1. Rowan County (26-11) – The Vikings return eight starters off last season’s regional semifinalist squad. However, coach Keith Prater graduated his top two pitchers, including the New York Mets’ 11th-round draft pick Cameron Planck. No one player will replace Planck or No. 2 pitcher Seth Johnson, but Rowan County fans can be consoled by the return of one of the area’s brightest young stars in sophomore pitcher/infielder A.J. Hacker. Seniors Peyton Fannin (catcher), Ethan Ratliff (shortstop), John Nickell (outfielder) and Harlan Carter (outfielder) should all return to their starting positions. A talented sophomore class that includes Shane Taylor, Corey Binion and Ryan Mullen will round out the lineup. After Hacker, Prater will probably regularly rotate his troops on the mound. Twelve of the 18 players on the roster are listed as pitchers. Once again the 1016sports area is full of talented teams, but nearly all have to replace at least one key player. In the last two seasons, 1016sports can boast a state runner-up and two state semifinalists as well as a top-10 nationally-ranked club. It is not a stretch to expect similar outcomes this spring.
