2019 Preseason
1. Rowan County (30-7)– The Vikings get the nod for No. 1 because of their outstanding pitching staff and balanced offense. Leading the way is Morehead State signee and second-team all-state selection A.J. Hacker (10-2 W-L, 0.71 ERA, 125 K, .283 BA, 40 RBI, 5 HR). The senior pitcher topped the state in strikeouts last season and will be one of the contenders for Mr. Baseball. However, coach Scott Collins’ pitching staff is more than just Hacker. Senior outfielder/pitcher Matthew Gagliano (.417 BA, 44 R, 16 SB, 6-1 W-L, 1.70 ERA, 66 K) and freshman infielder/pitcher Chase Alderman (4-0 W-L, 2.93 ERA, 32 K) are both formidable. For an extra boost, Rowan County added transfer Mason Moore, a sophomore pitcher/utility player who went 6-0 with a 2.59 ERA and 72 strikeouts for state-participant Paintsville last spring. Offensively, the Vikings will turn to speedy senior centerfielder Shane Taylor (.382 BA, 32 RBI, 35 R) and junior infielder Devon Stevens (.378 BA, 46 R, 12 SB) to kick-start the attack. Senior catcher/pitcher Corey Binion (.357 BA, 51 RBI, 4 HR, 14 2B), who finished fourth in the state in RBI last spring, adds power to the lineup. Senior infielder/pitcher Ryan Mullen and junior utility player Nick Eastham both return as starters with senior infielder Gabe Markwell adding depth. In total, the Vikings return eight starters and 14 of 19 members off last year’s 30-7 team, which fell in the 16th Region championship game to Greenup County. This year’s Vikings are heavy on experience. Seven team members are seniors, but the club has also bolstered its roster with the addition of 13 newcomers. The Vikings will have challengers for the top spot in the area. Several of the historic powerhouses should return to traditional form this season with some smaller schools also figuring into the mix.
