2020 Preseason
1. George Rogers Clark (16-4-2) – The Cardinals’ surprise resurgence last season should continue into 2020. GRC was 5-14-3 in 2018, but after hiring Nick Vogler as its new head coach, the club posted impressive results last preseason and continued it through the regular campaign before falling in the 10th Region semifinals to eventual champion Calvary Christian. Vogler was the 2019 “1016sports’ Coach of the Year Runner-Up”, while freshman forward Brandon Beltran (31 goals, 12 assists, 74 points), who finished 16th in the state last fall in points per game and 17th in goals per game, was the Newcomer of the Year. Both are back, as are two more “1016sports’ Terrific 26 to Watch”: senior midfielder Nathaniel Sidwell (seven goals, 14 assists, 28 points) and senior goalkeeper Tayman Hayes (1.2 goals against average, 9.4 saves per game, six shutouts – tying for the 24th-best mark in the state). In total, 16 letter winners return and are joined by 12 newcomers. Only six players are not back, five of which won letters, the most significant of the departures are freshman midfielder/forward Skyler Hamon (20 goals, one assist, 21 points) and senior midfielder Tyree Brown (six goals, four assists, 16 points). Collectively, the group accounted for 67 of the team’s 215 points, 27 of its’ 79 goals and 13 of its’ 57 assists. Senior defender Conner Brown (two goals, four assists, eight points), sophomore forward/midfielder Will Carrington (two assists), senior midfielder/forward Trevon Curtis (two goals, two assists, six points), junior defender Joseph Dolen (three goals, three assists, nine points), senior defender/midfielder Taylan Hayes (six goals, three assists, 15 points) all return having played critical roles last fall. Clark County allowed just 1.09 goals per game in 2019, the 15th-lowest total in Kentucky, while also posting eight shutouts, which tied for 10th most. That defensive prowess, particularly the return of Tayman Hayes, is what separates the Cardinals from the rest of the pack, specifically arch-rival and perennial 1016sports’ preseason No. 1 team Montgomery County. Offensively, GRC returns 68.8 percent of its offense. Statewide, last year’s squad finished 29th in goals per game at 3.59 and 21st in scoring margin at 2.5 gpg. Senior midfielder Nate Horseman; senior defender Zeke Ross; and junior defenders Brandon Head, Benjamin Riley and Carter Smith all saw significant action last year and are expected to continue to play major minutes this fall. The Cardinals have a strong sophomore class, a group that includes Beltran, Carrington, and defenders Kyler Gashel and Jackson Queen. Newcomers made an impact last year and this year’s club will remain dominated by its younger players. Of the 28 team members, only eight are seniors. If GRC falters, Montgomery County, East Carter, Boyd County, Harrison County, Rowan County and Campbell County should be in a position to take the reins.
