2018 Preseason
1. East Carter (36-5) – Last year’s preview could be repeated here. Coach Derek Calhoun’s Lady Raiders are flat out loaded, returning nearly everyone from the squads which finished tied for fifth at both the 2017 and 2016 state tournaments. Oh yeah, East Carter also has arguably the nation’s No. 1 ranked player in senior pitcher Montana Fouts. The Alabama signee posted gaudy stats of 29-4, 0.43 ERA, 448 K (pitching) and .567 BA, 66 RBI, 12 HR (batting) last spring. Louisville commitment Eden Mayo, a senior second baseman, also returns boasting a .528 batting average, 39 RBI and four homers. Entering this year, eight team members have started at least two seasons. That group includes three more two-time all-1016ers: senior center fielder Taylor Jackson (.436 BA), senior third baseman/outfielder Gracie Robinson (.287 BA) and senior shortstop/third baseman Madison Sparks (.383 BA). Add to that sophomore first baseman Graycee Castle (.367 BA) and junior left fielder Lindsay Holmes (.275 BA) and the Lady Raiders form a powerful offensive lineup. Four others add depth and serve primarily as specialists or defensive players. During its back-to-back regional title campaigns, the squad posted a 73-7 overall record. With essentially the same lineup returning for a third straight season, this could be the year that the Lady Raiders collect state-championship hardware. However, East Carter’s path will not be easy, the 2018 season features an absolutely loaded 1016sports’ group, arguably the strongest collection of talent in any sport this year, and several of those teams rank among the state’s elite and are capable of challenging the Lady Raiders.
