raceland at Greenup
Greenup County (14-9) jumped out to an early lead and held onto it the rest of the way in claiming a 65-52 home win over Raceland (11-13) on Thursday. The victory kept the (also considered) Musketeers atop the district standings with a 5-1 record and gave the team its first regular-season sweep over the Rams in four years.
Behind Michael Hubbert and Gage Hughes’ perimeter attack, the Musketeers jumped out to a 17-11 first-quarter advantage and never looked back. A physical, defensive-oriented second period left the hosts with a 25-18 halftime lead.
Greenup County’s offense kicked in gear in the third period, again bolstered by the play of Hughes, who finished the quarter with seven points.
The two teams spent much of the final period at the foul line, where Greenup County was 10-for-17 and Raceland was 13-for-16. The Rams’ Noah Braden was 7-for-8 at the line in the fourth quarter and paced his team’s comeback effort with nine points.
However, the Musketeers did not back down. In the final period, Jherrell Jackson scored nine points, including going 5-for-7 at the charity stripe, to help the Musketeers secure their fifth home victory since the beginning of the calendar year.
Greenup County spread out its offense. Everyone who played registered in the scoring column. Hughes led the way with 19 points, finishing 10-for-12 at the free-throw line, while Hubbert had 17 and Jackson 13.
Braden finished with a game-high 20 points, sinking 10-of-11 shots at the foul line. Tyler Morris added 15 points for Raceland.

PRE-GAME NOTES: Tue., Feb. 2 – Boys’ basketball tonight: Raceland (11-12) at Greenup County (13-9) at 7:30 p.m. Host Greenup County (ranked among the “also considered”) faces 63rd District rival Raceland. GC joins Lewis County atop the district with 4-1 identical marks, although the Lions own a win over the Musketeers in the lone meeting this season. Raceland sits tied with Russell in third at 1-4. Including tonight, the Musketeers have three home games remaining. However, the club will be on the road for its next three contests. GC is 7-4 at home this winter, which includes an 85-56 victory over district foe Russell on Jan. 29. It has alternated wins and losses in each of its last four home games. The Musketeers dropped their most recent outing, 70-57 at Magoffin County on Tuesday. The squad is 3-4 over the past three weeks, but started the calendar year with three consecutive wins for a 6-4 mark. The Rams are playing the first of back-to-back road games, before capping off the regular season with four straight at home. The Rams won their last two outings, both at home, beating Fairview 51-48 and Menifee County 68-38, but are 4-8 since the beginning of January. Raceland dropped its last two road contests, including most recently (Jan. 29) 52-33 at St. Joseph Central (Ohio). On the year, the Rams are 5-5 away from home. Tonight’s meeting is the second this season. Greenup County won 50-45 at Raceland on Jan. 7. The teams have split their last four meetings, with each winning on the other’s home court (except for last year’s district tournament which was at Lewis County). Since 2014, Greenup holds a 4-3 edge in the series. Raceland won the three games prior to that, with the Musketeers reeling off W’s in the nine previous outings dating back to 2008-09. In last year’s meeting in Lloyd, Raceland captured a 70-61 victory (1/8/15). Greenup won the prior encounter on its home court 73-57 on Feb. 6, 2014. The Musketeers are 4-2 at home against the Rams since 2010-11.

third-quarter offensive outburst leads bath to victory over russell
Bath County (7-18) won for the fourth time in six games by capturing a 53-50 come-from-behind home victory over Russell (5-19) on Tuesday night. The Wildcats snapped the Red Devils’ eight-game win streak in the series and raised their record to 5-2 at home this year.
Defense was the story in the first half as Russell built a 25-18 halftime advantage, but Bath County stormed back to out-score the visitors 16-8 in the third quarter to take the lead.
Jake Mitchell led the way by scoring 10 of the Wildcats’ third-period points, sinking all four of his free throws. He continued to be the story in the final quarter by adding 11 more points. Twenty-one of Mitchell’s game-high 25 points came in the final 16 minutes.
In the second half, Mitchell hit eight straight foul shots to stave off a last-second comeback by the Red Devils. As a team, Bath County was 7-for-11 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, while Russell was 2-for-3.
Red Devil guard Bobby Hale went toe-to-toe with Mitchell in second-half scoring as the two traded baskets. Hale registered 19 points in the final two quarters, including 13 in the fourth, finishing with 23.
The visitors were without leading scorer Ethan Raby, who missed his first game of the year, while Bath County regained the services of senior Brandon Combs, who had been out for the past six weeks with an injury. Combs finished with 10 points. Russell’s Jared Fannin was the only other double-figure scorer with 14 points.

PRE-GAME NOTES: Boys' basketball tonight: Russell at Bath County (6-18) at 7:30 p.m. The Red Devils are playing their final game of six straight on the road, while the Wildcats are opening a four-game home stand. This is the second meeting of the year between the two. Russell won 87-80 in the consolation round of the Eastern Kentucky Conference Tournament at home on Dec. 8. BC has dropped two straight, but is 3-5 in its last eight outings. The Wildcats are 4-2 at home this season. Prior to falling to East Carter 54-40 in its last Owingsville outing on Jan. 28, Bath County had won its last three home games. Russell enters on a five-game slide and only has one win in its last nine outings. The Red Devils fell in all five of their games on the current road trip and are winless in their last seven away contests. Russell is just 2-15 on the road this winter. The Red Devils have dominated the series recently, winning the last eight meetings. The two teams have played annually this century, with Bath County’s last victory coming at home on Dec. 15, 2009, 60-52. The Red Devils have won the last two games in Owingsville, 83-58 on Dec. 23, 2013 and 74-43 on Dec. 13, 2011. Before the current streak, the Wildcats had won the four previous outings between the two.
