lady bears win by 15 on homecoming night
BROOKSVILLE | Host Bracken County capitalized on its advantage in the post and a poor shooting night from Pendleton County in claiming a 52-37 victory on Homecoming Night.
The Lady Bears out-rebounded the LadyCats 58-33, including grabbing 27 off the offensive glass. Aryah Myrick led the hosts with 18.
With Aryah Myrick on your team, most nights you’re going to out-rebound people,” Bracken County coach Sam Elsbernd said. “There are nights when she does that and really cleans up around the rim for us pretty nicely.”
Pendleton County (8-14) started off with a 7-3 lead before the Lady Bears took control. Bracken County (9-15) scored all 12 points over the final five minutes of the opening quarter and never trailed again.
The hosts continued their defensive dominance holding the LadyCats to just two points over the first three and half minutes of the second period and stretched their advantage to 29-17 by halftime.
The lead swelled to 24 points by the end of the third quarter after Bracken County held the visitors to just five points in the period.
“I thought that when we played zone, we were really able to extend their offense and force them into some bad decisions and (put up) some shots longer than they wanted to take,” Elsbernd said. “From there, I just thought that led to some easy baskets for us.”
Pendleton County found some offense in the final period, but it was too little too late.
“We went 3-for-13 from the free-throw line and we gave up 21 (sic) offensive rebounds,” said Pendleton County coach Paige Bowling. “Those were two keys that we talked about right before the game that we didn’t execute on. However, with the poor shooting night, I was at least happy that we got a ton of shots up.”
Elsbernd credited three players as the key to the victory.
“The difference in the game was the play of Natalie Bell, Kennedy Carl and Aryah Myrick. In my opinion, they were the best three players on the floor tonight,” he said. “Our offense was kind of a three-man game with them. We were trying to find shooters outside of that, but for the most part they were just able to control the game, and we were able to get good looks because of those three.”
Carl, a senior guard, led the team with 23 points. She did most of her scoring by driving to the basket and either converting a layup or getting to the foul line. Carl was 10-for-11 at the charity stripe. She also grabbed nine rebounds, eight of which came on offense.
“Tonight we just really attacked the basket. We knew that they were smaller than us,” she said. “We played man-to-man tonight and that just kind of helped us get going, get steals.”
Bell contributed 17 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Myrick finished with six points.
Shelby Turner paced Pendleton County with 12 points, two rebounds and four blocks. Sydney Manor also scored 12 points. Alexis Eckart and Casey Jones led the team with five rebounds apiece.
It was Pendleton County’s seventh defeat in its last eight games.
