2014-15 girls' athlete of the year
2013-14 boys' athlete of the year
connor messerRaceland
Honorable Mention:
Messer did a little bit of everything for Raceland this year. He was the 1016sports’ Football Player of the Year and won state Class A track & field titles in the 110-meter hurdles, high jump and pole vault, and taking second in the triple jump. To no surprise, he walked away from that meet with the Kentucky National Guard Best & Brightest Award. He captured the hurdle title by nearly six tenths of a second, the pole vault crown by two feet and the high jump championship by four inches. He fell just an inch shy of winning the triple jump and four state crowns. He also swept the regional titles in all four events. On the gridiron, he tallied 711 receiving yards on 34 catches for 10 touchdowns, added 29 rushes for 224 yards and four scores on the ground, and was 9-for-15 passing for 97 yards and four TDs. No less of a threat on defense, Messer also collected 53 total tackles, including 33 solo efforts, and snared three interceptions, two of which he returned for scores. Messer also was the team’s primary return man on special teams and ran back a punt for TD. He even kicked an extra point for Raceland, which finished 11-3 and won its first-ever regional crown. During the winter, the multi-dimensional Messer averaged 12.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field, despite playing in just 16 games for the Ram basketball team. Messer was the lone individual to earn 1016sports’ Player of the Week honors three times this year.

2013-14 girls' athlete of the year
sandra skinnerGeorge Rogers Clark
Honorable Mention:
Skinner made her biggest mark on the basketball court, where she averaged 14.5 points and eight rebounds per game, in addition to shooting 54.8 percent from the field during the regular season, en route to helping lead the Lady Cardinals to the state semifinals, before finishing with a 27-8 record and both a district and regional title. In the team’s state tournament opener against Corbin, she finished with 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. In the round-of-16 game against Marshall County, she followed up with 15 points (on 6-of-8 shooting), 12 boards and two blocks. She was one of the top junior hoopsters in the state and at the end of the season was named to the Kentucky-Indiana Junior All-Star team as one of the state’s six core team members. She also ran cross country for the Lady Cards, but made her biggest contributions away from the basketball court on the track, where she boasted Class AAA state championship finishes of fifth in the high jump, eighth in the triple jump and 14th in the long jump. At the track and field regionals, she won the high jump, was second in the triple jump and placed fourth in the long jump.
