mason holds off late challenge from bath to win season opener
OWINGSVILLE | Mason County scored twice in the first half and then held off a late challenge from Bath County en route to capturing a 2-1 road victory in Monday's season opener for both teams.
The Lady Royals began the scoring in the 20th minute with a Chyann Datko goal off an Aerika Venne assist, before the Lady Cats even got off their first shot. The visitors pushed the lead to 2-0 on an Emylee Brophy goal with an assist from Emily Woods with just under a minute remaining in the half.
Mason County out-shot Bath County 24-7 in the initial 40 minutes.
The Lady Royals kept the ball in the hosts’ defensive zone for the opening portion of the second half before the Lady Cats gained some momentum. Bath County’s Morgan McNabb had an open shot which bounced off the goal post and landed near the goal line before Neveah Wright was able to clear it.
Bath County continued to pepper shots at Lady Royal keeper Serenity Kilgore, but could only put one in the back of the net in the 75th minute as McNabb took a long pass from Karalyne Swartz in the back and was able to slip it by the keeper on a 1-v-1 from about 15 yards out.
On the night, Mason County out-shot the Lady Cats 24-11 and also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Bath County goalkeeper Candice Caskey was credited with nine saves, while Kilgore had two.
The win was the Lady Royals’ seventh consecutive over Bath County dating back to 2013.

PRE-GAME NOTES: Mason County (6-7-3 in 2018) at Bath County (10-6-1 in 2018) at 6:30 p.m. in both teams’ season opener. The Lady Cats went 5-2-1 at home last year, while the Lady Royals were 5-3-1 on the road. The last meeting came in 2017, a 9-1 Mason win in Owingsville. The Lady Royals have won the last six meetings. Bath's last victory in the series was on 9/5/13. This will be the debut of Lady Cat coach Lisa Risner, who has taken the program’s reins this season.
